As parents and family members of future or current Angelo State University students, it’s important that you understand the process of applying for and accepting scholarships. We’ve compiled these five tips to help you navigate the scholarship process and help you and your student pay for college.
1. Always fill out the FAFSA. While ASU’s scholarship programs are designed to help your student pay for a college education, we highly recommended that all students – regardless of actual or perceived income – complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This will ensure that you receive consideration for all need-based aid (including scholarships).
2. Research deadlines. Scholarship programs have different application deadlines, so it’s important that you do your research early to ensure quality application materials are submitted for priority consideration.
3. Understand the application process and selection criteria. In some cases, different scholarship programs use different applications. Be sure you understand the application process and selection criteria before applying. You can always contact the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office with questions.
4. Look for renewability standards. While some scholarship programs are renewable for several years if your student maintains satisfactory academic progress, some scholarship programs are offered for just one year or one semester and are not renewable.
5. Thank your donors. ASU is thankful to have great donors and friends who contribute to our scholarship programs. Even if your student brings in outside scholarships, we highly recommend that your student write a thank-you note to those who helped him or her pay for a college education. The Office of Scholarship Programs can assist your student in writing thank-you notes.
